Rumour Mongering: Chelsea Prepared to Sell Liverpool Target Gallagher

Former Liverpool transfer target Conor Gallagher is likely to be sold by crisis-hit Chelsea but it seems likely Liverpool have moved on.

Chelsea are a club in crisis. After spending more than £1B under new owner Todd Boehly, including more than £400M last summer—and more than £250M on midfielders Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Romeo Lavia in 2023—they languish in 12th.

They were most recently beaten by Everton, who without their points deduction would be four points ahead of the London Blues. And midfield, despite that massive investment, looks a particularly weak point, with none of their new signings having so far impressed.

In fact, it’s 23-year-old Chelsea academy product Conor Gallagher who has been their midfield standout this season—and maybe even their player of the season to date. Which makes it rather odd that it appears Chelsea are prepared to sell him in January.

Gallagher has been linked with Liverpool in the past, with it suggested Jürgen Klopp would value the hard working midfielder as a squad option, and that means there’s already been some Liverpool-related chatter following news he could soon be on the move.

Following Liverpool’s own midfield rebuild, though, it’s hard to see how Gallagher improves on the options Klopp has at his disposal. For Chelsea, meanwhile, the player’s club trained status means his sale would count as pure profit and help balance the books.

While Gallagher has been Chelsea’s best midfielder this season, the theory goes that ideally he would be a rotation option behind the likes of Fernandez and Caicedo—and so Chelsea will bet on those players coming good while selling the homegrown option.

For Liverpool, today, he would be that rotation option behind three new signings in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch that have already come good and at best fill a similar role to the one Curtis Jones already has in the squad.
