Having suffered five competitive defeats in 2023 compared to just three wins, it’s fair to say Brazil are a nation in crisis on the football front, with the Seleção tenuously holding onto the final automatic World Cup qualification slot in CONMEBOL.
That crisis has the Brazilian media talking options, and amongst those options is a nugget of Liverpool interest, with UOL proposing 20-year-old São Paulo centre half Lucas Beraldo as a potential Brazil option—and claiming the Reds are his top suitors.
Rumour mongers from Spain to England have been quick to pick up on the story linking the well-rounded young star with a move to England, and in less than a day there’s already been attempt to set a £20M price tag and add Newcastle to the mix.
All of which is to say this seems something of a speculative bubble of chatter, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility UOL would have some insight—and for whatever it might be worth, the focus of their story was decidedly not on Liverpool.
Which is to say that they, at least, didn’t appear to be courting transfer chatter. They just wanted to talk about some promising Brazilian players in the midst of a rather tough run for the national team. Then others saw they’d mentioned Liverpool.
