Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Target Boca Holding Mid Ezequiel Fernández

The origin of the latest Liverpool rumour leaves us skeptical but on paper Fernández makes for an interesting potential target.

After being heavily linked Fluminense midfielder André last summer—and with it possible the Reds will return for him in January or next summer—it appears as though he might not be the only South American-based holding midfielder on the target list.

At least according to the rumour mongers, who’ve added Boca 21-year-old Ezequiel Fernández’ name to the mix. That’s the latest from CalcioMercato, in any case, though our eyebrows are going up at an Italian outlet claiming insight into an English club’s interest in an Argentine player.

Still, on paper Fernández does potentially look the part and fits a similar mold to André as a player who’s more controller than destroyer and perhaps seems more naturally suited to a double-pivot than playing as a single six.

If that does represent the preferred profile for Liverpool at the position moving forward—and with willing workers with big engines in the eight it could be viable—then Fernández could make for an interesting target. Still, it’s hard to get past the rumour’s source.

Having had his name put into the mix, though, we’re bound to hear more about the Boca man in the coming months, and as one might expect the CalcioMercato rumour has been getting plenty of attention in the Argentine press with more English coverage sure to follow.
