Liverpool’s 20-year-old centre half Rhys Williams becomes the third Red to sign a new contract on transfer deadline day following Jordan Henderson and Nat Phillips. Unlike the other two, though, the young defender is now heading out on loan.
Following the signing of a new contract through the summer of 2026, Williams immediately completed his move to joining Championship side Swansea for the 2021-22 season, with the Swans seeing Williams as useful for their goal of a return to the Premier League.
For Williams, it may not be the Reds but it’s still quite the step up from his previous loan, as before injuries gave him a first team Liverpool chance last year the Preston native spent 2019-20 with Kidderminster Harriers in the sixth tier of English football.
Williams made 19 total appearances for Liverpool last season after the club’s injury crisis forced Jürgen Klopp to move down the depth chart and in the end he was key to the club’s late push to finish in the Champions League places.
