Liverpool are expected to sign a forward and midfielder before the transfer window ends but given the strength of their first team it could be that any signings will be with an eye towards the future—and for finding value in a pandemic-hit transfer market.
One new name to add to the list of potential targets, and one that could check off both boxes for the Reds, is 21-year-old Lille striker Jonathan David, with the French club on shaky financial footing and potentially needing to sell key players this summer.
It’s that need to sell that has in part helped fuel links between the Reds and another Lille player, midfielder Renato Sanches, and while this is the first time David has been linked this summer his is a name that has been attached to Liverpool in past windows.
Or at least that’s the story being sold about the Canadian international by Canada’s TSN, who claim the young attacker ranks near the top of Liverpool’s wish list. However, there are an awful lots of ifs and maybes to the story, making it all seem rather speculative.
Still, on paper at least David would be an intriguing prospect, having signed for Lille just last summer in a €30M deal when he joined them from Gent after two successful seasons in the Jupiler Pro League where the youngster scored 37 goals in 83 total appearances.
Last season, he scored 13 goals and three assists in 37 league games to help Lille to the league title, and his willingness to press and drop from his central striker position would seem to make him a potential natural understudy to Roberto Firmino.
