After being linked with a move to Liverpool last summer before the Reds instead brought in Diogo Jota from Wolves, the past week has seen Watford’s 23-year-old Senegalese attacker Ismaïla Sarr once again being talked up as a target.
Now, though, outlets with ties to Watford insist there’s nothing to the Sarr to Liverpool revival, that the Hertfordshire club have not been contacted about the player, and that the player himself has given no sign he wants a move this summer.
While it’s never fully possible to fully know what’s going on behind the scenes and a situation can change quickly, it seems likely in this case that Watford are looking to calm fans who may have been concerned by the recent chatter.
Add in the highly unreliable sources for the initial rumour, and it appears to be a case where Watford’s message to their fans can be taken at face value—and that while any player might be sold for the right price, a Sarr transfer isn’t in the works.
For the Reds, the current priority is to new homes for fringe squad players, after which point, while the squad is generally regarded as both good enough and deep enough, the club might consider moving for a target of opportunity.
