Few Liverpool youngsters over the past decade have been as highly regarded as Ben Woodburn, with the player being talked about as atop prospect for so long that it can be easy to forget the Welsh international is still only 21 years of age.
His future, though, is likely to lie away from Anfield with just a year left to run on his current Liverpool contract and the club said to be receiving serious interest this summer from a number of clubs on the continent and in the Championship.
That’s the story according to The Athletic, who say that while Liverpool and manager Jürgen Klopp have been impressed by Woodburn in pre-season this year, if the player wants to leave in search of a clearer path to playing time they won’t stop him.
According to the report, unnamed clubs in Greece, Denmark, and Croatia as well as few in the Championship are interested. However, if the player is open to extending his stay he might still have a future at the club according to Pep Lijnders.
“Again, what a performance from Ben,” noted Liverpool’s assistant manager. “The energy he brings to the team is exactly what we stand for. A good mover and he unbalances the opposition constantly with the ball but also with his movement.”
Lijnders added that he believes Woodburn still “has an Anfield future” if he wants it, which might have seemed a stretch at the start of the summer given but given his age and recent performances now doesn’t seem nearly as much of one.
