Reports have varied on Liverpool’s levels of interest or involvement with Atletico Madrid midfielder Saúl Ñíguez. Saúl has been touted as a possible replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, who set off for PSG last month. Some say the Reds have already made a €40M bid for the player when Atletico wanted €50M. Others say that things haven’t progressed past interest in him.
However, it’s said that Barcelona are in the lead for his signature. They are trying to negotiate a swap for Antoine Griezmann amidst a cascading set of financial problems and the possible departure of Lionel Messi.
If things fall through with Barcelona, then Liverpool and rivals Manchester United are monitoring Saúl’s situation and will look to swoop in and sign the player.
There is still five years remaining on Saúl’s contract, but Rodrigo De Saul has joined the La Liga outfit from Italy, and so Atleti and manager Diego Simeone have made it clear that they are willing to sell if the price is right.
It seems that there’s a new rumour daily regarding Saúl’s status, which makes it difficult to judge what’s true and what’s not, though the consensus from most is that Barcelona remains the favourite.
