Having played a key role in Liverpool’s push to finish in the top four, Nat Phillips has ensured he will be fondly thought of by fans heading into the 2021-22 season. Fondly thought of by fans, though, doesn’t necessarily equate to playing time.
One that front, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joël Matip all returning from injury and new signing Ibrahima Konaté set to join up for pre-season, on paper at least Phillips will be battling for fifth on the depth chart with January arrival Ben Davies.
And that could lead to a summer departure for the 24-year-old. Or at least that’s what the Burnley locals at Lancashire Live think, as they set him out as the “perfect” solution to Sean Dyche’s need for defensive reinforcements this summer.
It may not be a full fledged report of ongoing negotiations, but given past whispers about supposed Burnley interest in Phillips and the outlets connections at the club, it’s likely if his name is being put out there it reflects at least some interest.
On the Liverpool end, if Phillips wants a clearer path to playing time and a club offers £10M, it’s hard to see them standing in the way of a move. If he’s content to stay, though, his presence would be reassuring heading into next season.
