As the summer transfer window nears opening, Liverpool Football Club continue their offseason re-structuring. The newest claim, according to ESPN, is that Liverpool’s second choice goalkeeper, Adrian, will forego a contract extension in favor of leaving the club.

Adrian joined Liverpool in the summer of 2019 as cover for Alisson Becker, but soon found his services called upon much more than anyone expected. Alisson got injured very early in the 2019-2020 campaign and missed a significant portion of the season. When he needed to step up, Adrian answered the call admirably. He made 18 appearances for the Reds in Alisson’s stead. In his 11 Premier League matches, the team took away all 33 points, contributing to Liverpool’s incredible title victory.

However, last season, Adrian hasn’t had many opportunities with the team, and failed to impress in the few he received. He made six appearances in all competitions. His three league games included the nightmare 7-2 loss to Aston Villa at Villa Park in October. After that debacle, Klopp favored the young Republic of Ireland stopper Caoimhin Kelleher over Adrian in a Champions League game against AFC Ajax and a Premier League game against Wolves.

It’s no surprise then that the 34-year-old Adrian may be looking for more consistent playing time elsewhere.

If he does seek out another club, that will leave a gap in Liverpool first team that will need to be filled. Right now, other than Adrian, only Kelleher and 17-year-old Brazilian youngster Marcelo Pitaluga are behind Alisson in the goalkeeper position.

Despite the disappointment of the last season, if this is the end for Adrian, his safe hands during Liverpool’s 19th title victory should be what he’s remembered for.
