Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott’s loan to Blackburn Rovers last season worked out about as well as could be hoped for for everyone, with the youngster playing regularly and impressing massively for the Championship side.
There’s no doubt that if they could, Blackburn would take Elliott back for another year, but Tony Mowbray’s side have accepted that’s a near impossibility. Instead, though, they could seek to leverage last season’s Elliott success to secure another Liverpool loanee.
That’s the story this week, at least according to local outlet Lancashire Live, who identify 19-year-old, Blackburn-born Liverpool midfielder Leighton Clarkson as one of Rovers’ top summer transfer targets.
Liverpool are said to have been considering a loan for the youngster back in January, and Rovers are currently light in midfield and seeking reinforcements while being strapped for cash due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Clarkson made his Liverpool debut against Aston Villa in the League Cup in 2019 while the actual senior side was in Qatar for the Club World Cup. That was followed by an FA Cup appearance against Shrewsbury in February of 2020 and 90 minutes against Midtjylland in Europe last season.
The young midfielder is highly regarded amongst Liverpool’s youth prospects but isn’t likely to be in the first team picture this season, and if Blackburn can commit to giving him game time it would seem an ideal destination.
