Even while acknowledging the silliness of most transfer rumours, it’s fair to say we never imagined to see a transfer story that put Liverpool in a battle against David Beckham’s Inter Miami to sign Luis Suarez away from Atletico Madrid.
Yet here we are, with the transfer chatter in Spain claiming the Reds are one of two clubs trying to tempt the 34-year-old Uruguayan away from Atleti this summer—with the striker said to have a contract with the La Liga side that would allow him to depart.
The other club said to be looking to sign him away is the aforementioned Inter Miami, and while Suarez’ current contract has an option to extend through 2022 it needs both player and club to agree to its triggering.
However, it’s said that at the end of the day Suarez is happy playing for Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital and that both player and club would prefer that he stick around for at least one more season—which would seem to render any transfer chatter moot.
It’s also fair to wonder just how realistic a Suarez return to Anfield would be, though if the veteran was content with a squad role there would certainly be some among the fanbase who would celebrate it if it were to happen.
