In the autumn, Gini Wijnaldum’s future was said to be between Barcelona and Liverpool, but with the player holding off on re-upping with the Reds while Barcelona are in financial chaos and Ronald Koeman’s future as manager there is uncertain, those options have increasingly appeared in doubt.
Into that void of uncertainty, last week reports out of Italy claimed that the real competition for Wijnaldum’s signature might actually be Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, with PSG said to be the preferred destination for the player while Milan waited on the off chance the deal didn’t go through.
Now, though, we have another Italian claim, from Sportsmediaset as relayed by Inter Milan fan sites, that it’s AC Milan’s city rivals who are first in line to sign Wijnaldum. They go as far as to claim a “handshake” agreement is in place between player and club and that it will be formalised in the summer.
Given the player could sign a pre-contract with Inter today—could have as far back as the start of January, in fact—it’s hard not to be skeptical of this latest claim in the Wijnaldum saga, but if enough outlets throw enough supposed “favourites” out there, one is bound to be right eventually.
