Liverpool are out of the title race and for Reds fans and those who cover the club there’s no football to concern ourselves with until the weekend. Which makes it the perfect slow news week for the revival of a few transfer sagas.
The January transfer window may have only just closed, but looking ahead to the summer, Bild Head of Football coverage Christian Falk says Dayot Upamecano is the name to watch, with the Leipzig centre half having narrowed down his options.
As the story goes, it’s Liverpool who are finalists in England alongside Chelsea and, back in Bundesliga, Bayern Munich—favourites to sign Upamecano in most previous iterations of the ongoing Upamecano transfer saga.
Manchester United, once said to be a potential finalist and maybe even the 22-year-old French international’s most likely destination outside of Germany, are now said to be out of the running entirely to bring in the highly sought after defender.
Liverpool fans, though, might not want to get too excited. Even when the story was that United were contenders, most saw Bayern as favourites—and nothing has changed about that even if the Upamecano sweepstakes are down to three clubs.
It’s also worth remembering The New York Times’ Rory Smith—who got his start covering Liverpool and was known to have contacts within the club—previously said Upamecano’s teammate Ibrahima Konaté was their real top target.
