The transfer window may be shut, and football itself may have begun to feel more draining than anything for Liverpool fans looking for an escape from the realities of day to day life in the midst of a global pandemic, but that doesn’t stop the rumours.
Rumours like one out of Italy today claiming Renato Sanches is destined for Liverpool. One might ask, of course, why it would be an Italian outlet like CalcioMercato peddling the story of the Portuguese Sanches leaving French side Lille to join England’s Liverpool.
And the answer would be that the Italian outlet claim AC Milan are highly interested in the player but have consigned themselves to missing out as Sanches, who is still just 23 years old until he turns 24 in the summer, is destined for Liverpool.
The midfielder should still have his best years ahead of him and seems to have turned things around for himself with Lille after largely failing to live up to the wunderkid hype with Bayern Munich—or during his subsequent loan spell in England with Swansea.
However, given he joined Lille for €25M in 2019, it’s unlikely he would come especially cheap. It’s also worth noting that when Sanches was linked with Liverpool back in the autumn, journalists with ties to the club collectively panned the rumours.
Still, if one takes today’s Italian report at face value, somebody connected to AC Milan at least thinks Sanches to Liverpool is a thing that could actually happen when the 2020-21 football season mercifully comes to an end in a few months.
