A report from Bild suggests that Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria has turned down a contract extension from the club, amid links with the two most recent Premier League winners - Liverpool FC and Manchester City.
The 24-year old Swiss international’s contract winds down in 2022, so the German club would be incentivised to sell him this summer to attain a fee for him. It looks like that will happen as they already have a replacement in their squad ready in Kouadio Kone, a recent £8 million signing from Toulouse.
With Gini Wijnaldum’s impending summer exit on the horizon, it does make sense for Liverpool to be on the market for more legs in the middle of the park. Zakaria’s physical frame, energy and ball-keeping ability would certainly add to the Liverpool FC engine room that has been depleted by both injuries and having to play midfielders in defence for most of the season. That is of course unless City signs him... in which, whoopie-doo, this rumour never happened.
