Takumi Minamino arrived at Liverpool from RB Salzburg last January after the Reds triggered his £7.25M release clause.
At the time, fans celebrated a potential bargain signing following a pair of impressive performances by Minamino against the Reds in the Champions League earlier that season.
Since then, however, minutes have been hard to come by and Minamino appears well down the pecking order. Now, he could be joining Southampton on loan in a shock late deadline day deal according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.
It’s a move that seems unexpected on the surface and yet with Minamino not getting minutes at Liverpool and a need to make room in their Champions League squad for Ozan Kabak, it could make sense for all parties.
Still, that the club might let him leave to make room for Kabak in the European squad is another sign that Minamino’s career prospects at Liverpool are slim and fading.
Hopefully, if he does join Southampton, he will see the pitch more regularly than he did with the Reds and be able to begin to get his career back on track.
