Liverpool have signed Ben Davies from Preston North End in a deal rising to £1.6M, and as expected, 19-year-old youth centre half Sepp van den Berg has now completed a move on loan in the other direction.
The PEC Zwole youth product joined Liverpool in the summer of 2019 in a £1.3M base deal that could hit as much as £4.4M with add-ons, and with a fee like that expectations were high for the then 17-year-old defender.
However, even with the club suffering through a defensive injury crisis this season with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for the remainder of the season, first team action remained out of reach for him.
With that in mind, a move to Preston should give Van den Berg a path to first team action—and if he makes enough appearances, earlier reports claimed that Preston will be able to extend the loan through the 2021-22 season.
Preston currently sit 11th in the Championship, seemingly both safe from any real threat of relegation but also likely too far back to make a serious promotion push this season.
