After months of talk from the club that Liverpool weren’t going to make signings despite an ongoing injury crisis, the club moved quickly to officially announce the arrival of Ben Davies from Preston North End today.
The move has seemingly come out of nowhere—and appears to have come out of Michael Edwards’ bag of tricks. Even the player himself admits to being surprised by the move.
“It’s a huge opportunity,” the central defender told the club’s website. “Obviously it came as a bit of a surprise when it first came but once you start to get your head around it, the opportunity that is in front of me is incredible. I’d be silly to not make the most of it and learn off the players.”
Just about everyone thought that Davies was going to end up with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership over the weekend, but Liverpool “gazumped” their deal at the last minute. In the wake of that, it’s heartening to see a player speak so candidly about a move like this.
“I’ve never actually been to Anfield and I haven’t had a look around yet,” he noted. “I had a quick look out and had a look at the pitch and it looks like carpet, which obviously you’d expect.
“I haven’t actually walked out of the tunnel yet, so I’m looking forward to that. Just to be in this kind of atmosphere is brilliant.”
What a fun story. Can’t wait to see Davies get out on the field.
