We’re now two weeks into January. Two weeks since Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has been free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of England should he choose. That he hasn’t yet suggests his future isn’t decided just yet.
According to reports out of Spain today, though, there’s at least one man who is feeling confident when it comes to the seemingly open question about where Wijnaldum ends up playing his football next season: Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman.
As Mundo Deportivo would have it, Koeman believes all three of Wijnaldum, Eric Garcia, and Memphis Depay will join the club as free agents in the summer to bolster the financially floundering Catalan side’s on-pitch prospects in the 2021-22 season.
It’s hardly a new story, of course. And it’s worth noting that for every story from the Spanish side of things claiming Wijnaldum to Barcelona in the summer is a done deal there’s been one out of England claiming a Liverpool extension is equally likely.
Which means we’ll probably soon get another stressing Wijnaldum’s mind isn’t made up. Then another from Spain saying Wijnaldum to Barca is a done deal. Eventually we might even find out where Wijnaldum will actually play next season.
