Following earlier claims that Leeds United were preparing a £15M bid for 23-year-old Liverpool winger Harry Wilson, it now appears a minor bidding war may be brewing for the young Wales international with word that Newcastle United are also interested.
This comes care of The Northern Echo, who identify Wilson as one of Newcastle’s top summer transfer targets along with 22-year-old Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, with manager Steve Bruce wanting to sign one of the duo along with making two other permanent signings.
Wilson was a Newcastle target last summer and they remain interested following his loan spell at Bournemouth, but last year they were unwilling to meet Liverpool’s £35M asking price for Wilson.
To get a deal done now, The Echo say, the Reds would have to be willing to take considerably less—and given Leeds have been rumoured to be considering a £15M bid, even if there are two sides in for Wilson it seems unlikely he would fetch a £35M fee this summer.
That means Liverpool may have to decide between a fee likely closer to £20M or sending Wilson out on loan again, at least assuming manager Jürgen Klopp doesn’t see a place for him in his long-term plans.
On that front at least, that Wilson’s Liverpool contract runs through the summer of 2023 should give the club some bargaining power—and the ability to say no if they believe that holding off on a sale until at least next summer would earn them a more significant fee.
