Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Target Relegated Bournemouth Defender

Lloyd Kelly is rumoured to be back on the menu for the Reds, and as a transfer target he would at least make sense.

We know that Liverpool almost certainly won’t be spending big this summer, but we do know that the club have a few key holes in the squad that will need filling, with the need for a backup left back and centre half high on the list.

We also know that in the past they have made a habit of targeting players from relegated sides, and that this summer with the financial uncertainty caused by coronavirus as the background, relegated sides could be desperate to sell.

Which brings us to Bournemouth, who have been relegated and have a player who ticks every box for what the Reds might be looking for in Lloyd Kelly, a technically talented 21-year-old defender who can cover centre half and left back.

Liverpool have even been linked with the young Englishman before but were put off by Bournemouth’s asking price, which makes today’s suggestion by The Express that they’ve reignited their interest less than wholly surprising.

If it’s perhaps hard to tell if this is an outlet giving life to an obvious rumour based on no actual insight or if Liverpool actually are looking to sign Kelly, that only highlights that he’s a player the club reasonably might try to sign this summer.

He’s young, he’s English, he’s quite good, he covers two needs for the club that would help to get him playing time, and he’s at a relegated club and might actually cost less than he did a year ago when Liverpool first tried to sign him.

It’s been easy to rule out a lot of the rumours surrounding Liverpool that have cropped up this summer. Whether there’s any truth to it, it’s not so easy to rule out the idea that they would want to raid Bournemouth for Lloyd Kelly.
