For the past several seasons, Liverpool—along with every other major club in Europe—have been linked with Napoli’s stand-out defender Kalidou Koulibaly. However, his club’s asking price, rumored to be in the £100 million price range, was seemingly a non-starter for even the wealthiest clubs.
So, Koulibaly continued doing his thing at Napoli. But now, with the star defender entering the final year of his contract, it seems as if a move might become feasible. At least, that’s the logic being used by French publication Le10 Sport.
Assuming there’s a transfer window—a big assumption at the moment—the publication reports that Napoli’s asking price will be slashed, for fear of losing their star player on a free transfer next year.
So naturally the best team in the world were once again linked, as well as Newcastle, who will likely be flush with cash if the new Saudi ownership deal comes through.
Liverpool will likely need another defender if and when the transfer window opens. Veteran defender and freshly-minted conspiracy theorist Dejan Lovren will likely be moving on in the summer.
However, Koulibaly will be 29-years-old before he can sign for Liverpool. While center halves typically peak later than other outfield positions, paying what will still be a sizable sum for an aging player does not fit with FSG’s recent and successful transfer strategy.
We’ll leave it to Michael Edwards and his team of literal astrophysicists to uncover the next Kalidou Koulibaly (or better yet, the next Virgil van Dijk).
