Remember last week when Klopp rang up Mbappe’s dad for reasons unknown but wildly speculated? Remember that it’s only been seven days since that happened? Remember when time had meaning? Yeah, me either. Anyway, Liverpool legend John Barnes has weighed in on the Mbappe-to-Liverpool rumours and he has placed himself firmly in the skeptical camp.
Not because Mbappe to Liverpool is unlikely, but because he just doesn’t think the 21-year-old French international will fit well into Klopp’s regime. Specifically, he doesn’t think Mbappe would be able to support the rest of the team when he didn’t have possession of the ball, like Firmino currently does.
“I think [Firmino] is the most important forward in what he gives the team,” Barnes told the Daily Mail on a day that probably happened this “week”, if “weeks” are still things. “He gives Liverpool invention in tight areas.”
“[The Reds will] need to sign another forward at some point in case one of the front three leaves but it will have to fit what Klopp wants. Kylian Mbappe is fantastic on the ball but would he do the other stuff?”
“Klopp signs players to fit his system, not only because they looked great at their previous clubs,” Barnes added. “Ninety nine per cent of people wouldn’t pick [Jordan] Henderson and [Georginio] Wijnaldum above Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva or even Jack Grealish or James Maddison, but they work for Liverpool.
All of this is obviously just speculation and someone asking Barnes about a rumour that’s already incredibly unlikely. We’re all just twiddling our thumbs here, Barnes included.
