Despite a series of impressive cup performances and Liverpool offering him a new deal, the safe money was always on 23-year-old midfielder Pedro Chirivella leaving the Reds on a free this summer in search of a clearer path to regular playing time.
To that end, in recent weeks much was made of Rangers’ interest in the player, with Steven Gerrard said to have made bringing in the Spaniard a top priority. If that was true, it appears he will be missing out on Chirivella the same as Liverpool.
That’s because a report from French daily 20 Minutes claim the player is expected to arrive in Nantes this week to undergo a medical and finalise his deal. Nantes finished the season mid-table in Ligue 1, tied for 12th on points per game with Bordeaux.
The player is expected to sign a three-year deal with the French club, though it is not yet clear if Chirivella will extend his stay at Anfield to finish the 2019-20 season or depart the club at the end of June even if the season isn’t yet completed.
Regardless, a couple of seasons starting for a French mid-table side should give him the chance he needs to develop, either finding his level or perhaps earning a move to a bigger club in Spain, Italy, or England in a few years.
