Three years ago today, Philippe Coutinho was playing out his final full season at Anfield. And he was a star. Maybe even a superstar. At the very least, he was by common consensus Liverpool’s best player.
Then came the part where he asked to move to Barcelona and got a back ache and then six months later got his move to Barcelona just before the Reds took off on their stratospheric rise back to the top of English and European football.
Then came the failure to establish himself at Barcelona. Then came a loan to Bayern Munich where he hasn’t impressed enough to earn a permanent move.
And next? Next up could be Everton. At least according to Sport, who claim that while Chelsea might be his likeliest destination, if that move were to fall through there is real interest on the part of Everton to bring Coutinho back to Merseyside.
We’ll just say it off the top, we don’t think Coutinho’s stock has fallen to the point where it’s at all likely such a move materialises. Still, if true, that Everton even think they have a chance says something.
Mostly something about the grass not always being greener and trying to appreciate what you’ve got while you’ve got it. Or maybe something about trusting in Jürgen Klopp. But probably one of those things.
