Per reports from someone utterly bored and desperate for a story, Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has called Mbappe’s father (also his agent) to get a better handle of where the French international stands on a potential move to Anfield. Klopp has been a fan of Mbappe for a while (as have we all, let’s be honest) and it makes sense that he’d be trying to gauge interest right now when there’s literally nothing else to do.
After all, haven’t we all reached the point of self-isolation where we’re calling the parents of incredible footballers who just happen to be their agents? I definitely have.
In all seriousness, though, an Mbappe move would happen concurrent to a Sadio Mané departure—something that a lot of us really don’t want to think about. If Mané were to depart, Liverpool would be hard-pressed to find a suitably creative and productive winger. Mbappe is one potential solution.
When asked about his future at PSG, Mbappe was clear that he’d be interested in other challenges.
“I think that it is a very important moment for me as I feel that I am approaching a first, or second, turning point in my career,” the player said last summer. “I have discovered a lot of things [at PSG] and I feel that it is perhaps time for greater responsibility. I hope that it will be with PSG, which would be with great pleasure, or maybe elsewhere with a new project.”
It’s really hard to say if Klopp’s phone call says anything at all about the likelihood of a Mané move, or of a potential Mbappe transfer. We’ll just have to wait and see.
