Among the wide variety of transfer rumor mongerings, the “some dude who isn’t associated in any way with Liverpool thinks X” is my least favorite kind. But that’s exactly what we have today.
“I think he is probably a better second choice,” Phillips said to Football Insider. “Adrian has come in this season, had a couple of good performances and shown that he can do a job. But yes, he made a couple of mistakes before the break.
“I would say Karius is a better goalkeeper. I think Karius has shown that he is a good goalkeeper and I think Klopp would prefer him to be Alisson’s understudy next season.”
I mean, seriously Football Insider? You couldn’t even get someone from the Goalkeepers Union?
Obviously this is just pure conjecture and a controversial take to get those clicks going.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has about as much buy-in from the fan base as is possible, but even so, this might be a bridge too far from many Liverpool fans. Although I personally believe that the elbow-shaped mitigating factor should be enough to forgive Karius for the events of Kiev, many Liverpool fans will never get past it.
Adrian, on the other hand, has been a good servant and a backup keeper that has the trust of the Kop, even after his own disastrous Champions League errors, leading to elimination. But he was also able to come in during long stretches of the season, and keep Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League hopes alive. Moreover, he just seems like a good locker room presence, and happy to be here.
This scenario seems really unlikely, despite Karius’ loan to Besiktas not working out. Better luck next time, rumor mongers.
