Rumour Mongering: Real Betis Want Liverpool Goalkeeper Adrian

A report out of Spain claims the Sevilla side want to bring in the Spanish shot stopper this summer.

Having signed a short, two-year contract and arriving as designated backup to star starter Alisson, Spanish shot stopper Adrian probably never expected to be at Anfield long-term. If reports out of Spain are to be believed, it could be a very short stay.

That’s because local Sevilla outlet Estadio Deportivo claim that Real Betis want Adrian next season, which would be all well and good given he previously spent four and a half seasons with them and might be interested in a return if it meant starting minutes.

However, the local report suggests that it wouldn’t. That instead he would be signed by the mid-table Spanish side as competition for Joel Robles. Which has to raise a few eyebrows. Adrian might want to go back to Betis for minutes, but to sit on the bench?

Estadio Deportivo also seem to be under the impression that Adrian’s Liverpool contract expires in the summer—as in, that Betis could sign him on a free when the season ends. This isn’t the case. His Liverpool deal runs through the summer of 2021.

It is a potential third year, and not the second, that is based on an option, which means that for him to sign for Betis this summer they would have to pay a fee. Or at least Adrian would have to push very hard for Liverpool to let him go on the cheap.

Then Adrian would need to take a pay cut. Add it up and it’s a strange nothing of a rumour, though coming from a generally reliable local outlet one perhaps has to credit Betis’ interest as genuine. It’s just hard to see how it amounts to anything.
