We’ve been told by those with connections to the club not to expect any £100M-plus megastars to arrive at Anfield over the summer, with Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp continuing to prioritise keeping the current group together.
Still, expectations are that more so than last summer, a few key squad players will leave and a few new players—likely younger—will arrive to replace them with an eye to the future. And one of those could be Samuel Chukwueze.
At least according to France Football, who claim that the 20-year-old Villarreal winger was the target of a £30M bid in January with the Reds seeking to beat out the potential competition for the young star by moving early.
The French outlet—here covering a Nigerian player at a Spanish club who’s being linked to England, so best treat it all with a healthy dose of skepticism—further hint that his arrival would have allowed Xherdan Shaqiri to depart.
Now, while it’s unlikely Liverpool would have let Shaqiri go last month, there were a smattering of rumours the Swiss international could have been on his way out and, if true, a move for Chukwueze would make sense of those.
And it could give us a bit of insight into a potential top summer target. Or, of course, given it’s a French outlet covering a Nigerian player at a Spanish club who’s being linked to England, there might be nothing at all to it.
