The transfer window may be over, but the rumour mill never stops. A report from BILD has suggested that Liverpool FC, along with Manchester United and Manchester City, are interested in securing the 21 year-old Frenchman’s signature.
The young defender has often been touted as the solution to Manchester United’s defensive woes, and has been linked with a transfer away from RB Leipzig for some time. Despite other stars (*cough* rhymes with Fimo Berner) leaving the energy-drink fuelled club, Upamecano ended up staying at the club and signing a new deal extending his stay until 2023.
The German newspaper reports that there is an understanding that Upamecano will depart after this season, with a €40M release clause included in the new contract. They also point to the signing of Josko Gvardiol from Dinamo Zagreb, due to arrive next summer, as Leipzig preparing for the departure of Upamecano.
On paper, this makes a lot of sense. He already plays in a system similar to ours. Jürgen Klopp has known to wait it out for players he really desires, which could explain the absence of a fourth-choice centre-back. The €40M release clause, if true, would make this an absolute bargain. Liverpool’s right-sided centre-backs have been inconsistent in the last few months, and or just plain unavailable due to injuries. Plus, it’d rob our rivals of a quality centre-back. (Can City splash another 40-50 million on another defender? Yes. They can.) That is.. if all of this is even true, because it’s BILD, and rumours should be treated as rumours until they appear to be actually happening! Stay tuned.
