Boubakary Soumaré is just 20 years old and has established himself as first choice as Lille’s most defensive-minded midfielder, starting 25 games so far for the Ligue 1 side this season across all competitions and earning positive reviews.
This follows on from last season were, at 19, he started 22 total games after a season when, at 18, he started 17 times. He is, it seems fairly safe to say, a player with a very bright future. And that future might just be in England with Liverpool.
Or so say Le 10 Sport, who are claiming that while Soumaré will remain at Lille this month, he’s weighing up his future options with multiple big clubs around Europe showing their interest and—the reason we’re here—Liverpool frontrunners.
Of course, while Soumaré is clearly promising, it’s only right to treat rumours like this with a healthy dose of skepticism. Especially given the player’s age and that his contract will have just two years left on it when this summer rolls around.
Given his age, league, and that his contract is now beginning to wind down, it’s safe to say that his wages aren’t currently in line with his importance to Lille, and there’s every chance these rumours are part of new contract negotiations.
Soumaré looks a very interesting young player, and he will almost certainly leave Lille sooner or later, but joining a club the size of Liverpool this summer might come a little early for him in his development.
