The transfer window is dead. Long live the transfer window.
Although the Premier League window is well and truly shut, transfer rumors abound.
Yesterday it was an outgoing rumor, with Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren linked to Bayer Leverkusen on a €3 million loan deal. Today, it’s an incoming rumor, with the Reds apparently interested in 20-year-old Bayer Leverkusen striker Kai Havertz.
German publication Sport 1 are claiming that Liverpool are interested in the £91 million rated lad, along with...checks notes...every other big club in England and Europe, apparently. Plus Manchester United. Cool.
Of course, no English club can sign the exciting young talent, at least not this month. While the rest of Europe still have free rein to make new signings, English clubs will have to wait until at least January or next summer to make an offer for the player.
Havertz had a breakthrough season last year, netting 20 goals and adding 6 assists in 42 appearances. He can play either through the middle, or on the right side of a three-man attacking front line.
This would obviously be a huge outlay for an up-and-coming striker, costing nearly as much as Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane combined.
However, there surely must be some succession planning going on at the club. While all three players are in their prime, it sadly won’t last forever, and you never know when time or transfers will catch up with the club.
Whether Havertz is the answer to the succession question or not is another thing altogether. Regardless, it’s nice to be mentioned in the same breath as other European Royalty, and feel like we have as good of a shot as any at landing high-priced, talented youngsters.
