Liverpool Reportedly End Talks with AS Roma for Dejan Lovren

Looks like the Italian club will be moving on to the next guy.

Since it’s not a great time to release one of our four senior centre backs, I’m enjoying the reports that Liverpool have walked away from negotiations with AS Roma. Dejan Lovren may want to play more regular football and Michael Edwards may have been trying to work out another incredible deal for an outgoing player but keeping the Croatian in the squad sounds like good news to me.

On Friday, the ever-reliable Paul Joyce announced on Twitter that Liverpool were no longer interested in dealing with Roma because after some early talks of a love connection, the Italian club got weird.

“Liverpool end talks with AS Roma over the transfer of Dejan Lovren. Despite suggesting they would pay around £18 million, the Serie A club has failed to table an official proposal and instead used intermediaries to negotiate a small loan fee”

Lovren is good for a mistake, yes. It is known. But Lovren does plenty of really good things. He passes well. He’s wins aerial duels. He does a fair bit of yelling. Side question: Does Joël Matip yell?

All of Lovren and Matip and Joe Gomez had lengthy spells on the sidelines due to injury last season. Virgil Van Dijk had a stellar fitness record but Jürgen Klopp should be ready for anything and keeping all four of his centre backs on hand could prove critical as the wear and tear of the campaign begins to show on the squad.

Obligatory shout out to Sepp van den Berg who will probably work his way into 4th choice by October anyway.
