Liverpool Reportedly Rule Out Championship Loan for Harry Wilson

The young winger’s future isn’t decided, but one place he won’t heading is back to the second tier on loan.

Earlier this month, reports from journalist with ties to Liverpool suggested that Harry Wilson would be given pre-season with the club before a decision was made as to whether to keep, loan, or sell the 22-year-old Welsh winger.

If reports today are true, though, at least one option has been ruled out, with a move to the Championship a no-go per the Birmingham Mail, who claim both Derby County and Leeds United have recently been told as much.

It’s hardly surprising. Wilson excelled at times for Derby last season, but if his future isn’t with the Reds and no club pays the fee they set for him, a loan to another Premier League side is the only move that would make sense.

On that front, Wolves and Aston Villa are both said to be interested, though whether it’s in taking Wilson permanently or just for the coming season isn’t clear—and in any case that decision isn’t going to be made just yet.

With Liverpool’s frontline all busy this summer due to the Africa Cup of Nations and Copa America, there will be a shortage of forwards for Jürgen Klopp to work with for much of pre-season and a need for capable bodies.

For the time being, then, there’s only upside in giving Wilson a chance at significant pre-season minutes and winning his place in the squad for the coming season.
