Following a strong season at Derby County on loan, 22-year-old Harry Wilson’s stock has never been higher and the result has been a number of inquiries into his availability from mid-table sides in England, Germany, and Spain.
However, Liverpool have reportedly decided to keep Wilson on hand through pre-season this summer before deciding on whether they will sell the youngster—giving him a chance to just impress enough to earn a first team role.
According to The Liverpool Echo, it’s due to the positive reviews on Wilson compiled by Liverpool coaches and scouts while he was on loan last year. Realistically, though, it might in the end simply turn out to be a numbers game.
With Copa America and the Africa Cup of Nations both this summer, Liverpool will be without their entire forward line to start pre-season. There will be a need, then, for attacking bodies—and certainly no harm in keeping Wilson around.
Though Wilson’s highlight reel goals while on loan at Derby drew the attention of many, there are questions about whether his pressing, dribbling, and creation statistics point to a player who has a long-term future in a Jürgen Klopp side.
With Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané, and Mohamed Salah all off playing for their countries, though, the club might as well give him a chance—and if he doesn’t take it, there will be plenty of suitors to meet a reported £25M price tag.
