Alberto Moreno’s Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season and, when it does, he will be moving on. That much seems clear. Where he ends up is another matter, with many speculating he could be in line to return to Sevilla but little solid to go off of.
According to one journalist with ties to Barcelona, though, there could be something to the rumours—rumours that have come up a few times this season—that the Catalan giants really are interested in Moreno as a cheap backup option for the 2019-20 season.
RAC1’s Gerard Romero has claimed today that Barcelona are currently firming up plans to bring in a new backup for Jordi Alba over the summer, and that the two most likely options are Liverpool’s Moreno and another Moreno, Rayo Vallecano’s Alex Moreno.
One way or another, it looks like Barcelona want a Moreno at left back, and that Liverpool’s would arrive on a free—the Rayo Moreno’s contract runs through 2021—could be in his favour. Rayo’s Moreno, though, has played this season. So that’d be in his favour.
Liverpool’s Moreno rather obviously has not, and one has to wonder if, at 26 years of age, he would want to head to Barcelona specifically to sit on the bench rather than going back home to Sevilla or to a mid-table Spanish side where he might get to start.
Of course, Rayo’s Moreno might not want to head to Barcelona as a designated bench warmer, either. If neither does, perhaps they can enquire into Albacete left back Angel Moreno Morcillo. If nothing else, it appears he’d have the right name for the job.
