Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Monitoring Neymar Situation

New, comments

A report in France claims the Reds are one of six potential destinations, which is good for a chuckle at least.

Liverpool are not going to sign Neymar. He’d cost too much, in fee and wages both, and would be a questionable fit in a Jürgen Klopp side. Plus, at 27 years of age—and turning 28 in February—he’s in the same age bracket as the club’s current front three.

That obvious reality, though, wasn’t enough to stop Le Parisien saying that they might; that they’re at least monitoring the situation as Neymar’s time at Paris Saint-Germain appears to be winding down; that if a return to Barcelona falls through, they could swoop.

For what it’s worth—and what it’s worth almost certainly isn’t much—Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus, and Real Madrid are said to be the other sides keeping a close eye on Neymar now to see if he gets the move back to Barca he’s said to be after.

According to the French outlet, at least, there is a firm belief in Neymar’s camp that a move away from PSG at least is essential next summer. So while a return to Catalonia is said to be his preference, failing that a move—any move—to another big club would do.

And with Liverpool having appeared in back-to-back Champions League finals, winning the most recent edition, and flying high at the top of the Premier League, there are obviously few bigger than the Reds right now. Still, it seems a speculative link at best.

The current best team in England along with the richest team in England, the top team in Italy, and a Madrid side that will be desperate to load up on expensive talent to reclaim their spot at the top of the La Liga pecking order. And, for some reason, Chelsea.

It seems more a list of easy, speculative options than one that reflects any deeper insight into Neymar’s future. Which might lie at Barcelona and might even in the end lie still at PSG but which we can state categorically will not involve a move to Liverpool.
