Genk midfielder Sander Berge made no secret of his fondness for Liverpool before the two sides last met in Europe and the 21-year-old Norwegian midfielder impressed enough for his fondness to snowball into a transfer rumour by the time the match ended.
Whether there was any truth to those initial rumours or whether it was simply opportunistic rumour mongers spinning an obvious story is anyone’s guess at the moment, but just a few weeks removed from those initial stories the Berge tale appears to be growing.
Now, according to Goal, Chelsea and Napoli are also interested in Berge, and while one might imagine his stated fondness for Liverpool and Anfield’s “best fans in the world” would give the Reds an edge, an edge doesn’t always mean getting the player.
At the moment, with Liverpool having a solid two-deep lineup in midfield and with Marko Grujic impressing out on loan, the Reds appear to be well stocked in the middle of the park—at least compared to Chelsea and Napoli, both talented but not as deep.
Still, if Liverpool truly are interested in Berge and if they do move for him, it’s hard to imagine either Napoli or Chelsea beating them to him at the moment—the question, then, is whether Liverpool truly are interested and planning to move for him.
