After Liverpool splashed the cash for The World’s Most Expensive Goalkeeper™ Alisson Becker, manager Jürgen Klopp was pretty clear that more incomings would be unlikely.
“We have everything we need for the next season because I don’t think we will do anything more (in the market), I’m pretty sure of that,” Klopp said in an interview.
This hasn’t stopped Liverpool from being casually name-dropped into transfer rumor mongering, and today is no different.
Apparently Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng popped in the rumor mill, and wouldn’t you know it? He’s supposedly linked with Liverpool.
For what it’s worth, former Red and current curmudgeon Steve Nicol is wholly against this wholly concocted rumor.
“I am not a huge fan. The last 12 months, he has had injury problems and form problems. So right now, no,” Nicol said on ESPN.
The interesting bit is that while I can find Nicol’s reaction to the Boateng rumor, I can’t actually find the source of said rumor. So this one is obviously happening. (Sorry, where’s the sarcasm font on here?)
Although Liverpool look a bit thin at center back, thanks in part to Joel Matip apparently getting fitness advice from Daniel Sturridge, this does not seem at all likely. At 29-years-old, Boateng’s best years are likely behind him (unless he gets fitness advice from James Milner). Also, luring a German player away from Bayern is always going to be a daunting task.
All in all, very little in this rumor. It seems to be the case of keeping Liverpool involved in the transfer (rumor) market, whether they like it or not.
