Another warm summer day, another rumour linking a Liverpool player with a move to La Liga. This time the complicated transfer rumour algorithm has picked Sadio Mané linked to Real Madrid. This idea began to catch fire in the wake of rumours over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future, and after Mané’s teammate Mohamed Salah, previously the player linked with this move, signed a new contract keeping him at Liverpool for another five years.

Mané, who is on holiday after Senegal’s heartbreaking World Cup group stage exit, opened up about these new stories. And while he didn’t exactly declare himself a Red for life, his comments should help quell some fears for the moment.

“These are just rumours. I am not aware of anything and haven’t been contacted,” he said. “I remain a Liverpool player and I will join my team-mates in the United States for the pre-season tour. Real are a great team, but I am focused on my team, Liverpool.”

With two-thirds of Liverpool’s potent attacking triumvirate — Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah — signing new Liverpool contracts, it’s safe to say that the club are working behind the scenes to do the same for Mané.

While Real Madrid will always be an enticing offer for any player, it seems clear that Klopp is building something really special with this Liverpool squad, and that Mané is an important part of his plans for the future. One of the team’s best players in his two seasons with the club, keeping Mané at Anfield will be a priority for FSG as the summer wears on. It would be fantastic if we could go into next season with all three of Mané, Firmino, and Salah locked down in shiny new contracts.

Until that days comes, the rumours will continue to spread about Mané’s future with the club.
