It’s no secret that Jürgen Klopp is looking to bring in one or two fabulous footballers to Liverpool before the transfer window closes. Preferably, before the season starts. And even better within the window of preseason preparations. Fabinho has already signed up, expected to over-fill the spot in the team vacated by Emre Can. Nabil Fekir was nearly a Red a week before the World Cup started but for whatever you believe happened on that fateful day. And then the rumours of Marco Asensio on Liverpool’s transfer list surfaced several days ago.
The story goes that Klopp has been eyeing Asensio for a while now and is adamant that Liverpool should do whatever it takes to book a Melwood lean. Telemadrid have actually claimed Liverpool are mulling over a £156million bid for the Real Madrid midfielder. If that amount takes you by surprise, you are not alone. The Spanish outlet also state that Asensio has a €700million release clause.
The player is in Russia with Spain and was professionally predictable when asked about the speculation he could move on from Madrid this summer and join Liverpool.
“It’s something that has come out,” said Asensio. “I’m very focused on this World Cup. When it’s over, that kind of thing will be talked about, I’m focused on making a great World Cup with the National Team.”
There is always a lot going on just under the surface during any transfer window. Motivations are endless and tricks are aplenty. It’s impossible to know fact from fiction in these reports of Liverpool’s and Jürgen Klopp’s “obsession” with Marco Asensio. Could just be that those are two recognizable names, easy to put together.
It’s a fun rumour to get excited about during your free time but I wouldn’t let it make you miss a meeting or anything just yet.
