Liverpool may be in the market for a new goalkeeper — and would you look at that? Southampton have a goalkeeper. Well, I think that after the last several seasons of Liverpool transfer activity, that’s all the proof we’ll need to confirm this story as fact. Welcome to Anfield, Alex McCarthy!

The shot stopper, voted Player of the Year by the team’s fans after his invaluable help in their regulation battle, is looking for a bumper £60,000-a-week to stay in Southampton past next summer, when he will become a free agent.

The Mirror and others are reporting that he wants the same £3m/year contract held by former Saints number one Fraser Forster, whom McCarthy ousted in December after a run of poor form.

Liverpool, as well as Spurs, who are on the look out for back up for Hugo Lloris, are said to be monitoring McCarthy’s situation. It’s heavily rumoured that the Reds are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer to replace or give competition to Loris Karius. The big contenders at the moment are Alisson Becker from Roma and Jan Oblak from Atlético Madrid, but expect links to many restless shot stoppers this summer until the situation is resolved one way or the other.

The added fact that it’s Southampton’s goalkeeper is reason enough for this rumour to take hold of the imaginations of the various gossip mags, though there’s no real indication aside from that tenuous link to suggest that Klopp or the transfer team has an interest in this one.
