The mutual love affair between Emre Can and Juventus has been an open secret for the whole of this season. As contract talks continued to stall, the Italian giants made their interest for Liverpool’s midfielder known. Once it became clear that Can wouldn’t continue on with Liverpool, it became a question of when the announcement would be made.
When his season was ended short with a back injury in March, fans suspected that would be the last time they saw Can wearing the Liverpool shirt. And barring a last minute miracle before the Champions League final, it seems that this might be the case.
To Can’s credit, he has been extremely professional about the entire situation, and didn’t let his frustration with affect his performance on the pitch. He hasn’t stepped a foot out of line as this saga stretched out, refusing to publicly discuss a move while the season wore on. The slight caveat to this is that Can’s contract was running out, so all he had to do to get the move he desired was wait.
Now that the summer transfer window is about to open, and Liverpool’s season nearly ended — aside, of course, from the glorious climax — we may be getting confirmation of Can’s move.
Speaking ahead of Juve’s last match this season, director Giuseppe Marotta told news outlet Mediaset Premium, “We are optimistic about the positive end of negotiations with Emre Can. We hope to announce his signing after the Champions League final.”
Emre Can’s Liverpool career was characterized by stretches of glorious brilliance, intermixed with disappointing mediocrity, but there was always the feeling that a truly world class midfielder was there somewhere. At only 24-years-old, the best is yet to come from the German international, and many fans will be sad to see him go.
