Of all the players Liverpool have been strongly linked with ahead of the 2018 summer transfer window—which opens for English clubs as soon as the season ends this week—there has been no position given more attention than the six.
With Emre Can almost certainly departing and Jordan Henderson having struggled with injuries for much of the season, a big name signing who can anchor the midfield looks a priority, and so far the transfer rumours have reflected that.
Another factor in that, though, could be that the player many think is Liverpool’s top target at the position could well end up elsewhere, and as a result the club may be working on multiple options in case their Plan A falls through in the end.
Many believe that Plan A in this case is Napoli ace Jorginho. His agent, though, has said that four or five English clubs are interested. And now, Sport in Spain and Sky in England are claiming Barcelona have also joined the race to sign him.
With Jürgen Klopp in charge and a Champions League final appearance on the horizon, Liverpool’s stock hasn’t been higher in recent years—maybe even ever in the Premier League era—but landing Jorginho could still be a long shot.
And with Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi, Wolves’ Ruben Neves, and another Napoli midfielder, Amadou Diawara also being linked, it looks like the club is going to ensure a new six arrives this summer no matter where Jorginho ends up.
