Rumour Mongering: Arsenal and Liverpool Battle for Max Meyer

The source is far from reliable, but this is one rumour Reds fans will hope is true.

Max Meyer has, at times, been strongly linked with Liverpool. And he’s been strongly linked with Tottenham. And, most recently, he’s being strongly linked with Arsenal, who according to the rumour mongers are set to battle hard for his signature—with Spurs falling from the running and Liverpool their main rivals.

The Star lead this round of rumour mongering, and they claim AC Milan and Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on the 22-year-old Schalke midfielder who’s out of contract at the end of the current season and has shown an unexpected ability to play in the six this year after first breaking through as a talented number ten.

With Jordan Henderson’s injury track record and Emre Can’s uncertain future, it’s not hard to imagine where Meyer—potentially able to play as the pivot or in a shuttling role—would fit in at Anfield. Yet there hasn’t been a lot of buzz about him moving to Liverpool before now despite that his contract is winding down.

That could mean that Liverpool are being mentioned along with Arsenal to help give the rumour a little more flavour rather than because The Star—who have no history of insight into the club—in this case have any kind of real insight into the club and its claimed interest in Meyer. Still, on paper Meyer does intrigue.

He’s a name that’s been linked off and on for years, has talent on the ball, and has now shown he can play at the base of a midfield. He’s young, he’s got upside, and he’s available on a free and could sign a pre-contract today. Certainly, then, regardless of the legitimacy of the rumours, a lot of Liverpool fans will want it to be true.
