After his best performance of the season, it was only natural that Liverpool fans would seek to reignite hope that Emre Can might sign a new contract to remain at the club beyond the current season. Add in a handful of upbeat soundbites from the player, and it was downright inevitable that talk would turn to a potential stay.
According to the press in Italy, though, the situation remains unchanged and Juventus are unconcerned when it comes to Can’s future. They still expect that, in the end, he will sign with Juventus, just as has been expected since last summer when it began to look as though a new Liverpool deal wasn’t going to happen.
Can, according to Tuttosport, has had his future decided for some time and it is only the length of the contract and a handful of minor details—though whether those are to do with a buyout or escalators isn’t clear—holding things up, but that in the broad strokes a deal has been in place for some time and both sides are relaxed.
They further claim that part of the reason for Juventus’ relaxed approach is out of respect for Can’s desire to focus fully on Liverpool while he remains at the club—they’re confident enough in getting the deal done that they see no reason to force the issue, potentially upsetting Can or Liverpool in the process.
Of course, until Can does sign for Juventus, there will be some hope in Liverpool circles of a new deal that keeps the player at Anfield beyond the current season. The safe bet, though, remains on Can departing at the end of the current campaign, even if so far all parties have tried to keep the rumbling transfer saga quietly civil.
