Want to rub some salt into the open wound of Liverpool’s second disappointing Champions League draw in as many games?

The Reds’ most wanted man, Virgil van Dijk, the Southampton defender that Klopp and co. spent the entire summer and a good part of the spring pursuing, gave his suitors a shout out during the launch of EA SPORTS FIFA 18.

When asked who he believes will do well in the Champions League this season, he answered, “I think Liverpool and Man City maybe.”

When pressed on the possibility of one of them actually taking home the trophy, he added, “You never know. It’s always going to be difficult and [it’s] a different style of play – European nights are always different.

“Anything can happen, especially if you are the big English clubs who are in the Champions League at the moment.”

Liverpool are certainly a big English club, but their performances thus far have not lived up to their vaunted reputation. And while it’s only September and there’s still plenty of time to save their Champions League campaign, something needs to change quickly or Liverpool will find themselves being relegated to one of the big English clubs in the Europa League.

But anyway, this stealthy wink and nod by van Dijk to the fans who he knows are still desperate to see him play in Liverpool Red is clearly proof that he will be headed to Anfield in January.

Heck, had it been Philippe Coutinho who said this about Barcelona, the Catalan press would have had him in a private plane halfway to the Camp Nou by now. And if you’ve followed along with this site during the recent summer transfer window, you know that we here at TLO Towers strive for nothing more than to match the unimpeachable journalistic integrity of the Catalan media.

So yeah, Virgil van Dijk will be a Liverpool player by 1 January, you heard it here first.
