It is no secret that Liverpool have been attempting to secure a contract extension for 23-year-old midfielder Emre Can. Equally, it is no secret that Italian Giants Juventus are interested in signing the German international, either this summer or next. The situation is vexing to Jürgen Klopp, as he hinted at after Champions League qualification.
“Even when you try to extend a contract with a player in the squad, they sometimes say, yeah, I want to play in the Champions League,” Kloppo explained.
“I always think, WTF? It’s your job to do it with us together! Don’t ask for us to do the job so you can come and play in the Champions League—do it with us together!”
If this sentiment was shared privately before the match as well as publicly after, Can certainly did his part with two crucial first half goals in the second leg.
Regardless, Italian media outlets are now reporting that Can has reached a verbal agreement to join Juventus next summer. Nothing has been (or could be) made official just yet, but he would be allowed to sign an agreement as early as January if he is determined to leave.
From the sounds of it, Can remains unconvinced that Liverpool will continue to challenge in the upper echelons of European football, despite the strides made by Klopp in his time so far.
Perhaps an excellent start to the campaign will change his mind, but for now it appears more likely than not that Can will leave for greener pastures next summer, whether or not this particular rumor is true.
