The Virgil van Dijk transfer, which was supposed to be one that Liverpool finished quickly in the early parts of this summer transfer window, trundles on as we head into the back half of the transfer window. The will they/won’t they hit a fever pitch when Southampton left the defender behind while the rest of the team traveled to France for some pre-season games.

Most recently, Sky Sports put out the above tweet about the convoluted situation. Now anonymous sourcing and vague assumptions do not a “breaking news” story make. This particular claim wasn’t backed up with a longer news item or any proof from Sky Sports, so it should be taken with a huge grain of salt. However, as far as transfer rumours go, this one is far from the craziest one we’ve come across.
Confusion still reigns regarding whether Liverpool can even make a bid on Van Dijk following their public apology for earlier inappropriate actions regarding the player. It does seem that Van Dijk is pushing for the move himself, though, which may be the only way that Liverpool have a chance.
What remains certain is that reports of this transfer’s death are greatly exaggerated, and will instead stretch on into August.
